Venue of Intensive Programme 2006: Haapsalu Vocational Education Centre

Haapsalu

Warm sea water, curative mud and fresh air have made Haapsalu well-known for centuries. Only a hundred kilometres away from the capital city Tallinn, it´s always been a loved summer resort in Estonia.

The oldest part of Haapsalu is built on a strip of land that was formed of many islets only a few hundred years back. Narrow streets with the wooden houses not changed much from the beginning of XXth century bring you to the sea again and again. The population of Haapsalu is 12 000, but it grows significantly during the summer holiday season. There are 8 hotels (including two large spa hotels FraMare and Laine) and plenty of restaurants in this small town, that becomes lively in holiday season. Must-see places: the ruins of Bishop's Castle (from 13th century), Estonian Railway Museum, Yachtclub and Marina, romantic summer cafe Kuursaal and many other things to see.

Haapsalu Vocational Education Centre

Haapsalu Vocational Education Centre (HVEC) is a state-owned vocational school with 500 students (age: 15-22) enrolled in 12 study programs (IT, catering, construction, tourism, book-keeping etc). HVEC moved  to its new location Uuemoisa in September 2005: brand new building with three computer labs, well-equipped lecture halls, cafeteria etc is located on the Eastern border of Haapsalu.
If you travel to HVEC by bus: Uuemoisa is the name of the bus stop where you have to leave the Tallinn-Haapsalu bus. You could also take a taxi to Uuemoisa from Haapsalu bus station.  Local bus No.2 goes from Haapsalu beach (the other side of the city) through the city centre to Uuemoisa once or twice every hour. The city centre is within 15 min walking distance from Uuemoisa.

Accommodation

HVEC has a brand new student dormitory right next to school buildings. There are some study and leisure rooms, gym and sauna in the dormitory. Some staff members stay at Päeva Villa, which is on the other side of town (about 3 km).
